School Nurse

Welcome to Cecil S. Collins Elementary School

I look forward to partnering with you to support the health and wellbeing of your child, and, in turn, of our community.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have regarding your child.

Regular school attendance is necessary for optimal learning; however, a child must be feeling well in order to maximize the learning experience.

The following are some health office guidelines to be aware of.

·        Illness:  Please keep your child home if they exhibit any of the symptoms below. All students with rashes and/or draining wounds or eyes will be excluded from school until cleared by their physician.

·        Fever: Your child must remain at home with a temperature greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. They may return to school after being fever free for 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol or Advil/Motrin).

·        Diarrhea/Vomiting: A child with diarrhea and/or vomiting must stay at home and return to school only after being symptom free for 24 hours. Student will be sent home if they vomit in school or have three episodes of diarrhea.

·        Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Following a diagnosis of conjunctivitis, the child may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of prescribed medication. A doctor’s clearance must be provided.

·        Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages. A child with a suspicious rash may return to school only after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and authorized the child’s return to school.

·        Medication: Every effort should be made to have any medication given at home. If this is not possible, remember that ALL medication, including non-prescription medications (e.g. Tylenol and Advil/Motrin), require written authorization from a doctor and parent. New Jersey state laws and regulations pertaining to the administration of medication require a Request form for the Administration of Medicine in School to be completed by a doctor, dentist, or an advance practice nurse. The form must also be signed by a parent/guardian. Medication must be brought to the nurse by the parent/guardian in the original labeled container. Students are not permitted to carry medication to/from school.

·        If your child has asthma, diabetes, allergies requiring the administration of epinephrine, or any life-threatening illness, please call me as additional medical forms will be required. Medical forms can be downloaded and printed off of our district website.

·        Emergency Contact Information: It is very important that the school be notified of any changes in emergency numbers.

I am looking forward to a great school year with your child!

Respectfully,

Dolores Hawrylo, RN, BSN, CSN
